Welcome to the Learning Center

Skills for School, Confidence for Life

Many city children have poor study habits and lack basic reading and math skills. For various reasons, many of them need help outside the regular classroom setting. No matter how dedicated their teachers are, some children fall through the cracks. Some parents and guardians are reluctant or unable to help with homework because of their own educational background, or lack of it. Some children have no one who is really interested in them; no one who gives them on-on-one attention.

At the Notre Dame Learning Center, children are tutored on an individual basis. Tutors not only help the children in their academic area of need, but also help them gain self-confidence and inspire them to be the best they can be. To see the Center in action, please watch our video or get to know us through our slideshow. You can support the Center by giving via PayPal or the United Way (see links at left). Our donor designated number is 2470.

Mission
To enable children, youth, and adults to reach the fullness of their potential through education in English Language Arts, Reading, Math, and Technology. (Read more of our mission).

History
As the name suggests, the Notre Dame Learning Center, Inc. began as a ministry of the School Sisters of Notre Dame Atlantic-Midwest Province. (Read more on our history).

Today
The Center is now a separate nonprofit 501c(3) organization still supported in part by the Province. The first class bells rang on March 1, 2004 in the Charles Settlement House. From a modest class of three little girls learning math with Sister Lorraine Burns, SSND (retired principal of Rochester's Holy Family School), the Center has served more than 300 children.

Our Students
Students come from the Rochester City School District as well as public, Catholic, and charter schools. We also assist students from private schools.

Tutoring is free; however, there is a $5 per-child registration fee for those that can afford it.

Meet the Staff
Sister Evelyn Breslin, SSND | Executive Director

Sister Mary Lou Brien, SSND | Assistant Coordinator & Reading Supervisor

Sister Mary Smith, SSND | Math and Computer Supervisor

"Cierra's skills not only get one-on-one attention; she also has a positive role model.

Thank you for all your support!!" (grandmother of math student)
