Volunteering at the Learning Center

A Gift of "Self" for the Children

The Center is staffed by three full-time School Sisters of Notre Dame, assisted by a cadre of about 80 volunteer tutors, some of whom were recently honored. There is almost always a waiting list of children. Volunteers and financial support are always needed.

The Center's most important need is for tutors, who act as mentors and provide the academic help our students need. Tutors come from all walks of life. Most are not trained educators. Some are business women and men, retirees, high school and college students, and yes, some are teachers.

Training is provided by the SSND staff. To volunteer please click Application Form in the "Helpful Links" navigation column at left or, for more information, call or e-mail Sister Mary Lou.

Tutor Profile
Chip Galvin, a packaging sales representative from Webster, believes that kids who have a desire to learn should be given an opportunity to do better.

"I like to see the kids gain confidence academically. Hopefully it will pay dividend s as they grow up," he says. Chip, a graduate of Bishop Kearney High School, University of Vermont, and Penn State, talks to students not only about the day's assignment, but also about education and what it will mean to them. "Kids have to think about doing well in school because it's their only avenue to success," he believes. For Chip, tutoring is a way to give back to the community. "I never focused on academics, but you'd be amazed how quickly anyone can be a tutor if they have a desire to really help kids. It's a great way to contribute, giving positive reinforcement to kids who can really be successful if people take the time."
