What is the history of the School Sisters of Notre Dame?
The first School Sisters of Notre Dame came to visit Rochester in 1848. One of them wrote in her letter back to Munich that “Rochester is the prettiest city we have seen in America.” The first mission in Rochester was Saint Joseph Orphanage, Elementary School and Business School opened in 1854 by Mother Caroline. Since that time, schools at SS Peter and Paul, Saint Boniface, Holy Family, Holy Redeemer, Saint Michael, Holy Ghost, Saint Margaret Mary, St. Philip Neri, and Bishop Kearney were staffed by over one hundred SSND’s As the number of SSND’s has dwindled in the Rochester area to 12 sisters and 2 associates, the Notre Dame Learning Center has been established to carry on the heritage of the pioneer sisters . . . to listen to the cries of the earth and its people, and to respond by transforming through education.
